Nutritional Information

Nutritional Information, like politics and religion, can be a dangerous topic to try to cover. Go into any bookstore and look at the books on nutrition, many which contradict the other.

In today’s world the nutritional value of food, whether fruits, vegetables or meat is lower than it was fifty years ago. Pollution in the air, water and ground introduces toxic chemicals into our bodies wherever you happen to be on the planet.

Processed foods, sugar, salt, and poor diets have led to a population that is fatter than previous generation. Children are getting adult diseases like diabetes and learning or behavioral disorders are rampant. Diseases such as diabetes, heart attacks, strokes as well as many different forms of cancer are overwhelming our health care systems.

Are we poisoning our bodies?

Many of these issues are as a result of nutrition where rather than making our bodies healthy, we are poisoning them.

Obesity

The obesity level in all population groups is increasing at an unsustainable level which fuels a diet industry and supplement industry which is largely unregulated with advice that changes as quick as the weather in Saskatchewan!

Who are the “Bad Guys”?

The major food groups, carbohydrates, protein and fats, are accused of being the “bad guys” depending on who you talk to and on which day of the week you ask. You will hear the different pundits declare we need a diet with more protein … but the other group will say “No, you need to eat more carbs”. Then yet another group tells us we need more “healthy” fats. Who is right regarding nutritional advise?

There is the “carnivore diet “, the Mediterranean diet”, the “Atkins’ diet”, and the “intermittent fasting” plan. People are spending billion of dollars a year on these diets. They often work for a short period of time but are not sustainable. Then the person go off the “plan” and end up even heavier with an even slower metabolism. The “yo-yo” syndrome takes over the persons life along with discouragement.

I will be looking at a few of the fads out there. Only a few though as it seems new fads arise almost every year. Many people have been on five or six different weight loss programs. Those plans didn’t work but they look forward to the next one as it will be “the magic bullet”.

I will discuss the macronutrient, carbs, protein and fat. I will discuss some micronutrients and I will discuss hormones and how they affect our bodies.

Nutrition is a big subject and I will only scratch the surface. Put on your seatbelts and your helmet. Shut up and hold on for this could be a rocky ride.
