As I start my personal journey it is important that I start off recording the basic information.
Starting Stats
Today, Sept 1, 2024 I decided to get serious and back into shape. I weigh in at 227.2 lbs with a body fat of 20.10 % as measured using calipers and the Jackson/Pollack 3 site.
Following are My basic Statistics
Age: 70 year
Height: 72 inches (6 feet)
Weight: 227.2 Lbs
Neck: 18 inches
Chest: 47 inches
Waist: 42 inches
Biceps: Right: 15.75 inches Left: 15.5 inches
Thighs: Right: 23.5 inches Left: 23 inches
Calf: Right: 15 inches Left: 14.5 inches
Body Fat Measurements – September 1, 2024
Jackson Pollock 3 sites: 20.10%
Navy % Body Fat Scale: 25.38%
Tanita Body Composition Scale: 28.8%
There is quite a difference between the three measurements. The Jackson Pollock will be the most accurate. Over the years while on my personal journey, I have found the Navy method to over-estimate by about 22%. The Tanita scale can fluctuate throughout the day as it relies on the hydration level of the body. As an example, the measurement above was taken first thing in the morning with no food taken overnight. I just measured today (5 pm) after eating throughout the day and my weight was 227.7 with a 21.6% body fat. For sure, you don’t lose 7.2% body fat in a day! I will talk more about measuring for % body fat both in a post and on a static page
Comment on waist size
If you look around you will see an awful lot of the population with large waist sizes. There are two different thoughts out there (wherever “there” is) about waist sizes. The International Diabetes Federation and the American Heart Institute state that a female’s waist should be 35 inches or less and a male’s should be 40 inches or less. This doesn’t really take in a persons height and when the height is taken in, the waist should be less than half your height. Therefore. I should have a 36 inch or less waist. Yet even if I use the first measurement of 40 inches, I am over that amount.
Excess fat on the abdomen indicates an increase risk of heart disease and diabetes, the latter which I already have. This is one of the factors that has made me go on this journey
% Body Fat Second Measurement Sept 8, 2024
After one week, here are the % body fat measurements
Jackson Pollock 3 sites 19.51
Navy Method 26.15
Scales 28.6
Weight 226.6 lbs …. down 0.6 lb
Waist 42 inches
I will be commenting on this in a block as it is an important factor in determining your (or my) progression.
